SNITZEL CLASS INFORMATION
Fabric Collage

This is a class about breaking out and doing “your” work in the medium of fabric collage. The format is small, and the rules are few.  It’s exhilarating!

It is a 10 month class (monthly), designed to provide a supportive, on-going, collective community of individuals who are interested in exploring their own creative process.

It will take place in an informal environment where sharing is encouraged. . Basic sewing skills are helpful, but not necessary (fusing is an option to sewing). No sewing machines are required in class.  If you have a machine it does not need to be fancy.

Class time will be used to explore design exercises, share, and critique.  At the end of every class the participants will be given a design problem to solve, and return with the solution interpreted in a fabric composition to the next class.

The class is fluid, and there is no requirement for “x number” of completed works.  It is about finding and exercising your creative voice at a speed that suits you.

We will be exploring: the elements and principles of design interpreted in fiber.  Included in this exploration will be learning about surface embellishments i.e. beading, thread work, fabric manipulation, painting, using resists, and much more.

Each participant will be asked to keep a note book of their work, and their learning as we go.  We will discuss how to build a palette of color in your fabric/thread/bead stash, and how to shop for what you need. You will use your own materials, but the participants are encouraged to share resources with each other.

SNITZEL: A small fabric sketch composed of little slices* and bits of fabric with all manner of embellishment; created with learning as the objective. Not to be confused with wiener schnitzel which, although also enjoyable, are not the same!

*SNITZEL-German, from the Middle High German snitzel, diminutive of sniz, slice.

SNITZEL CLASS OBJECTIVES

  1. To have fun while learning more about design principals and elements.
  2. To create, in a collaborative nurturing community of students.
  3. To take risks and be safe.
  4. To focus on process not product.
  5. To be encouraged to learn new techniques, and explore new possibilities.
  6. To learn to constructively critique your own work as well as others.
  7. To understand that every snitzel has something to teach you, not just the ones you like.
  8. To understand that even if you are not “Van Gogh” your work has significance. Creating is personally energizing, healing, and full of personal discovery. And your work can be used to contribute to the improvement of the world around you.
